(UPDATED 3/3/10) Well Patti made her claim as the biggest, baddest and best Bouvier…now it’s Selma’s turn:
I figured it was time for a new post since Selma has the potential to be a real doozy.
TR: The (Other) Stowe Derby (3/2/10 Updated with more pictures!)
This weekend was the venerable Stowe Derby: A race from near the summit of Mount Mansfield, Vermont all the way down to the town of Stowe. Needless to say, each and every one of the Famous Internet Skiers was eager to participate, but unfortunately none of us owned cross country or telemark skis. Since we didn’t want to make a fool of ourselves in the actual event, we decided that we would run our own private race just before the official race instead. Just a quick report from today. Nothing really all that exciting… we just went out and did a little recon for one of our favorite cliff bands, and were glad to discover that it’s ready to go next snow fall–so stay tuned. The real reason I feel the reason to post however was the visibility: about as close to zero as I’ve ever seen it (or “not seen it,” as it were). No offense to the blind, but I might as well have been using the Braille system to ski today; I couldn’t see anything.
Christian knows the cliff band is out here somewhere… now if only we could see more than 2 meters maybe we could find it.

Woah. What’s this nonsense. A new guy, Utah powder shots, giant red rocks, snowmobiles. Yes, that exactly what it is.

Just a few shots from today up on Mount Mansfield. It was too wet and stormy to fiddle around with the camera much today for fear of destroying our equipment. The official snow fall at the weather station near the summits was 17″ of snow which contained 2.37″ of liquid water (check the weather page to see more details about snowfall statistics by using the tools there). You can do the math to figure out the ratios, but needless to say, this wasn’t quite 2% blower. In fact, I can effectively use just one word to sum up today: WET.
To me it seemed like you couldn’t go more than a few yards without getting your gloves soaked, your goggles covered in glop, and a ball of snow down your neck to start a fresh leak through your pants and into your boots… and of course with this much snow, you can’t go more than a few yards without getting a face shot!

UPDATED 2/24/10 — Another week, another messy, impossible to forecast system(s) that’s bound to leave me looking like a fool.
First I want to apologize for missing some of those snizzle drops that hit the north country over the last few nights. It’s not my fault. I also want to apologize for my forecasts. Lately I’ve felt off my game. Sometimes you just see the weather and it makes sense and you nail a forecast. Sometimes you don’t and you feel like you are wading through mud making the forecast. The last two weeks have been like that for me. Sorry. I’ll get it back!
And I’m going to try to start with a system(s) coming this week.
