Wakin’ Up Winter

CAW CAW CAW.

Phew.  Dwyer and I were starting to think that it might only snow in New England this year.  Waking up Saturday morning, it was a balmy 55 degrees in Salt Lake City.  Before dawn we headed to one of the yearly pilgrimages – the annual ski swap at Black Diamond.  This is a ski swap like no other you’ll ever attend.  Cars start piling into the BD parking lot at 5 AM for a coveted tail gate sales spot.  The swap is more reminiscent of a Patriots tailgating party than a ski swap.

Ski bums, semi-pros, and photographers all rumble around selling gently used gear for a steal of a price.  In one row of cars I saw Lee Cohen, Steve Lloyd, and Justin Altman all set up.  It was like photographer alley!

caw caw caw

After a few hours of early morning ski bartering, the sky opened up and a deluge sent nearly everyone packing.  Every schuss-er in the Salt Lake valley was sent scurrying to their cars.  On the run they peered Wasatch-ward and to their delight they saw the tops of the hills getting their first veil of white.

Our crew decided to bide our time until Sunday morning, at which point we went lickedy split towards Alta with bated breath for the first snow of the season.

Luckily the auto road the the Cecret lift was open, and that was all we needed.  Dwyer saw one hill that measured a gentle 22 degrees.  He knew that was all he needed for Schuss.

BING.

Bang.

Boom.

That’s the gist of it.  Shallow pow, until tomorrow?!  Lionel’s got another 20-infinity inches on tap. We can’t wait.  We’ll be back with some real face shot come Monday or Tuesday!
