We just went live with a new front page (for real this time)! Let us know what you think by contacting us, or commenting below. We really want to hear what you think. If this doesn’t work for you guys, we’ll change it because that’s how we roll. If you’re just dying to access the old format, it’s still here, but we’re calling it The Blog. Go check it out! It’s just like old times.

This is the first of many improvements you can expect for FIS over the summer. If you have anything in mind that you would like fixed, or any features on the weather page (or whatever you can think of) just let us know. We’ll try to fix it up as best we can.

Here’s some random stoke from the winter (skier: Ben):

I don’t know. It seems too loaded.

Positive: you get to see a bunch of TRs and stuff.
Negative: too loaded…your strong points are your TRs and PICS. Old format played that better IMO.

Pat thanks alot for the input. I agree it’s “busy”. A part of what you likely saw last night was our “static cloud” of tags which was big and boxy and bulky… i felt like that alone was looking like a disaster of words.

we just replaced it this morning with a new flash based dynamic cloud of tags which i think doesnt clutter us up so much anymore.

anyway, we’re going to keep tweaking it and trying to find ways for “breathing room”, but as Harvey said below, we’re trying to cram stuff above the “fold” (or where you don’t see without scrolling when you land on the front page). That’s exactly the impetus behind the new design.

Anyway, will we see you Otto Rhode riding this weekend? We WON’T be able to go Memorial Day (next) weekend due to family obligations.

      Thanks dude! G

I really like the “dynamic tag cloud” or what ever you call it. (What do you call it?) Basically we’re working on a very similar modification on Harvey Road. Very nice comment link feature so you don’t need to know HTML ;).

A big portion of the action is above the fold on the home page. IMO it should be a clearing house for info – how to get where you are going.

And in a day or two and the Google adsense crawlers will come through and you’ll get some cooler looking ads where those Google “house” ad are.

My two cents. I think it’s great.

Harvey, thanks for the input. You hit the nail on the head: get content above the fold. In general we’ve found people spend very little time on our home page (although alot of people come through there). To get those people where they want to go we designed this updated front page. Eventually if it passes muster (and doesn’t crash computers) we’ll start formatting the rest of the site to meld with this look.

Adsense always does what it wants ::rollseyes:: Might be time to get a little more particular with the settings so we can avoid all these lame “house” ads (although they do pay pretty well ;) )

PS the flash based rotating tag unit lower right is called a “Cumulus Tag Cloud” which is different from your standard Tag Cloud which doesn’t move at all.
